Gallegly Hosts Meeting on Democracy for Iran

From Times Staff Reports

Rep. Elton Gallegly met Wednesday with other congressmen and the son of the former shah of Iran to discuss ideas for promoting democracy in that Middle East nation.

The Simi Valley Republican, a senior member of the House International Relations Committee, invited House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) and Congressman Gary Ackerman (D-N.Y.) to meet in his office with Reza Pahlavi, whose father was overthrown by a group of radical Muslim clerics who now rule Iran.

Pahlavi has been advocating nonviolent civil disobedience against the theocracy in Iran. He has been meeting with representatives of the U.S. government to request support for democracy in Iran.
