Former Police Official Sentenced for Massacre

A former police commander was found guilty of presiding over the worst prison massacre in Brazilian history, receiving a symbolic sentence of 638 years in a verdict heralded by human rights groups.
A jury found Col. Ubiratan Guimaraes responsible for the actions of troops who stormed Sao Paulo’s Carandiru prison with machine guns, rifles and pistols during a riot on Oct. 2, 1992, resulting in the deaths of more than 100 prisoners.
Guimaraes will spend no more than 30 years in prison--the maximum penalty under Brazilian law.
