Coastal State Braces for Major Cyclone

Still recovering from a massive earthquake, western India alerted the armed forces to prepare for a severe cyclone building up over the Arabian Sea.
Authorities began evacuating nearly 15,000 salt mine workers along the coast of Gujarat state as the cyclone with a speed of 115-125 mph was expected to hit the shore Saturday, Girish Murmu, the state’s relief commissioner, said in Ahmadabad.
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake shook Gujarat on Jan. 26, killing tens of thousands of people. About 1 million people were left homeless.
