Re “Rep. Crass (R-Bakersfield),” Commentary, Nov. 2: John Balzar hit one out of the park with his piece on Rep. Bill Thomas. The only problem was that he was too kind. Over the years I’ve watched this egotistical opportunist metamorphose from a smarmy state assemblyman to a mean-spirited member of the House drunk with hubris. One minor correction: Bakersfield is the birthplace of Merle Haggard, not Buck Owens, though the latter great man makes his home here and is a community treasure.
