Soccer Strike Date Is Set

England’s soccer players’ union called an unprecedented strike for Dec. 1 after the union head said talks over television revenue broke down Tuesday.

The Professional Football Players Assn. is asking for 5%, or about $40 million annually, of a television deal.

The first strike in the history of the English game loomed after the Premier League offered $30 million. The league said it would seek a court injunction to stop the strike.

Kevin Muscat scored on a penalty kick in the 79th minute, giving Australia a 1-0 victory over Uruguay at Melbourne in the first game of a total-goals playoff for the final spot in next year’s World Cup. The second game is Sunday at Montevideo, Uruguay.

U.S. Coach Bruce Arena selected MLS players exclusively for a 28-man team that will play an exhibition game Dec. 9 at South Korea.

Golf

U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen shot a six-under-par 66 to take a one-stroke lead over Masters champion Tiger Woods in the Grand Slam of Golf at Poipu Beach, Hawaii.

PGA champion David Toms shot a 68 and British Open winner David Duval shot himself out of contention with two double-bogeys to finish at 76.

Toms, Fred Couples, Mark Calcavecchia, Tom Lehman, Jack Nicklaus and Julie Inkster are among the players competing in the Hyundai Team Matches on Dec. 7-9 at Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point.

Horse Racing

Val Royal, who followed up his victory in the Oak Tree Breeders’ Cup Mile with a win in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, will start in Saturday’s $500,000 Citation Handicap at Hollywood Park.

Val Royal originally was going to skip the Citation, which is run at 11/16 miles on the turf, in favor of the 10-furlong, $2.3-million Hong Kong Cup on Dec. 16. Trainer Julio Canani said the plan is to run the 5-year-old in both races.

Miscellany

Ice Dog right wing John Lilley was selected player of the week and Mike Buzak was selected co-goalie of the week in the West Coast Hockey League.

Record warm weather and a lack of snow forced cancellation of the World Cup men’s downhill and super G races scheduled for Dec. 1-2 at Beaver Creek, Colo., and the men’s giant slalom scheduled for Saturday in Aspen, Colo. Men’s slalom races still are planned Sunday and Monday in Aspen.

The 2001 Wimbledon tournament made a profit of $46.4 million, an increase of $1.3 million from last year.

Courtney Renfro shot 83-83--167 and Susan Latch shot 88-80--168 to lead College of the Canyons to the women’s golf state championship at Del Rio Country Club in Modesto.

Jennifer Stopka of Moorpark was the medalist at 86-78--164.
