Storm Heads Away as Death Toll Hits 79

Taiwan’s worst tropical storm in decades churned away from the island, leaving 79 people dead, a battered subway system and traffic snarls from resumed work commutes.
Slow-moving Tropical Storm Nari moved off the southwestern coast and whirled into the Taiwan Strait after dumping a record amount of rain during the last two days.
Nari flooded much of the subway system in the capital, Taipei, and it could take months to repair the damage, Vice Mayor Ou Chin-der said. Many rail commuters were forced to use buses and cars, causing serious traffic jams.
Most of the 79 deaths were caused by flooding, landslides or downed power lines, officials said.
