Military Blocks Rally Against Referendum

Pakistan’s military government stifled the first major protest against a bid by President Pervez Musharraf to stay in power for five more years by holding a controversial referendum.
Police surrounded the headquarters of the Jamaat-i-Islami party in Lahore to stop a protest “caravan” departing for Rawalpindi, near Islamabad, the capital.
Party leader Qazi Hussain Ahmed was arrested after making a speech denouncing Musharraf and the April 30 referendum.
