A Metro Blue Line train approaching the Vernon station in southeast Los Angeles was struck by a tow truck Wednesday morning, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said.
He said an initial report that the truck had been rear-ended into the train’s path could not be confirmed as of 1:10 p.m.
The injured driver of the tow truck was taken to County-USC Medical Center. The seriousness of his injuries was not immediately known, said Ed Scannell, a spokesman for the MTA.
He did not know the train’s speed, but said it was heading north when the tow truck plunged through a fence running alongside the track and struck the side of the train’s first car.
The accident occurred about 11:40 a.m. near 48th Place and Long Beach Avenue.
Northbound and southbound lines were temporarily closed.
