Re “Senate Debates Permanent Demise of ‘Death Tax,’” April 24: I used to dislike the term “death tax,” but now I have come to see that it is not inappropriate, since dead people don’t need money. If one believes at all in furthering equality of opportunity, it is a good tax. Well-off parents can, while alive, provide their offspring with enormous advantages; why add to this by fostering a class of hereditary wealthy?
The children of nonaffluent but hard-working parents should not be disadvantaged merely because their parents did not make the accumulation of money their primary goal in life.
