Activist Sentenced for Assaulting Then-Mayor

A black activist and distant outsider in Seattle’s mayoral race last year was sentenced to 21 months in prison for hitting Paul Schell, the then-incumbent mayor, with a bullhorn, breaking his nose and shattering the bones around his eye.
James Garrett, who is also known as Omari Tahir-Garrett, was taken to county jail, officials said.
Jurors on Wednesday found Garrett guilty of second-degree assault with a deadly weapon in the attack on Schell in July 2001 at a community meeting where Garrett and his supporters had been heckling the white mayor.
In the September Democratic primary, current Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels won with 33% of the vote, while Schell got 22% and Garrett took just 0.4%.
