Man Gets Prison Term for Animal Cruelty

A Los Angeles man was sentenced to four years in prison Monday for setting off a powerful firecracker in a dog’s mouth and illegally possessing an explosive.
Compton Superior Court Commissioner Ronald Slick sentenced Gil Raul DeLara, 19, after DeLara pleaded no contest.
The dog, a stray that appeared to be a German shepherd, lost its lower jaw.
It was euthanized at a veterinary hospital.
DeLara’s lawyer, Fred Browne, said: “It was not a very bright thing to do, and he’s very remorseful.”
Officers responding to a call from a resident found the animal tied to a stake in an alley in the 10400 block of Hickory Street on Dec. 30.
DeLara was accused of 11 counts of recklessly possessing explosives, each of which carries a sentence of two to six years, and one count of animal cruelty, a felony that can bring a term of 18 months to three years.
He was sentenced to concurrent terms of four years for possession and two years for cruelty.
