D-Day Memorial Agency Denies Payments Owed

The agency overseeing the National D-Day Memorial filed court papers denying that it owes a builder and architect $2.8 million in construction costs.
The foundation, which has been struggling with debt for a year, did not give an alternative figure or reasons behind its argument in papers filed in Bedford County Circuit Court, near Roanoke.
A lawyer for Coleman-Adams Construction said the foundation’s president previously agreed to the $2.8-million estimate.
While rushing to complete the $25-million memorial in time for the June 6, 2001, dedication, officials discovered they were more than $1 million in debt. By October, officials acknowledged they owed about $7 million.
Construction since has shut down, and Coleman-Adams and architect Byron Dickson have sued the foundation for nonpayment.
