Some statistical nuggets about the city of Los Angeles from the first release of Census 2000 long form data Tuesday:
* The Latino population rose 23.5% from 1990 and the Asian/Pacific Islander population rose 15.2%. At the same time, the number of whites fell 15.4% and the black population fell 11.5%.
* Rental units make up 61.4% of the city’s housing stock.
* The number of children under primary school age rose 153.8% to 125,802.
* The number of people speaking a language other than English at home rose 23.4% to 1,974,316, or 57.8% of the city’s population.
* Adults with less than a ninth-grade education rose 9.1% to 437,758.
* Civilian veterans fell 27.4% to 173,683.
* Foreign-born people rose 13.2% to 1,512,708.
* People in manufacturing jobs fell 34.3% to 202,277.
* Families with incomes of $150,000 or more rose 79.4% to 58,776.
* Individuals in poverty rose 24.4% to 801,050.
