Thousands Rally to Demand Higher Wages

From Times Wire Reports

Tens of thousands of protesters, many of them elderly, gathered across Russia to demand higher wages and improved living standards.

In Moscow, about 12,000 people formed a 2 1/2-mile chain, waving banners that read, “Give us our back pay.” In Vladivostok, 4,000 people denounced utility rate increases and demanded the government’s resignation.

Under President Vladimir V. Putin, parliament has pushed through a string of market-based reforms, including a move to deregulate utility rates.
