Study Estimates Costs for Universal Care

Blue Cross of California released a study that put the annual cost of providing health insurance to the state’s 6.6 million uninsured residents at $7.8 billion. The study by a professor at Emory University elaborates on a proposal made by Blue Shield in December to offer universal health care in California.
Under the plan, the state would contribute about $4.5 billion, businesses would contribute $3.2 billion and individuals would pay $63 million. The plan assumes employers with 100 or more workers would pay at least 75% of the premium of an essential package.
