Update -- Already enduring a difficult season, Washburn has slipped to uncharted depths since the All-Star break, giving up 15 runs over 9 1/3 innings. The left-hander would be 0-2 over his two most recent starts except his teammates bailed him out with a five-run rally against Baltimore only to watch the Orioles win the game with a late home run off Francisco Rodriguez. Zito is also in the midst of a disappointing season, losing four of his last five decisions.

Ben Bolch was a Los Angeles Times staff writer from 1999 to 2026. Twice awarded top-10 finishes in feature writing by the Associated Press Sports Editors, he began his second stint as the UCLA beat writer in 2016. His first stint, during the 2010-11 season, ended with yet another crushing loss to Florida in the NCAA tournament.
