City Seeks High Court Review of Disability Suit

Sacramento is pushing the U.S. Supreme Court to consider its case over costly renovations of sidewalks even as it is set to continue settlement talks with activists for the disabled in court today.
Disability Rights Advocates of Oakland sued the city in 1999 on behalf of several disabled Sacramento residents, contending that city sidewalks need to be more accessible. City officials, however, said that retrofitting sidewalks isn’t the city’s responsibility.
“We’re spending more money on ... access than all other jurisdictions in the county combined,” said City Manager Bob Thomas.
