U.N. Approves Smaller Peacekeeping Mission

The Security Council approved a scaled-down U.N. mission in Ivory Coast with up to 76 unarmed military officers to help implement a peace deal aimed at ending nine months of civil war.
Despite the January peace agreement and a more extensive cease-fire that was reached this month, Ivory Coast remains divided.
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan had sought a 255-strong mission, but the U.S. demanded that the number be cut.
