Chinese TV goes crime-free

The Chinese government has ordered state-controlled TV networks to suspend prime-time airing of programs about crime and violence during the coming May Day holidays to provide a “healthy environment” for children.
Television should not air programs or images “showing blood, violence, murder or terrorism,” the notice from the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television said. The weeklong holiday begins Saturday.
Crime dramas are staple fare for networks and a key draw for advertising, but recent violent crimes involving youths have raised worries that Chinese children may be getting a bit too much exposure to the ugly side of life.
