Some Police Patrol Cars to Get Video Cameras

Digital video cameras could be installed in half a dozen Oakland police cruisers by summer.
Members of the City Council’s Public Safety Committee endorsed the project Tuesday. They said it would help restore public trust in police while reducing the number of claims filed against the Police Department for excessive force.
Last year, the city paid $5.5 million to settle dozens of legal claims.
The cost of each unit, which includes a camera and software, ranges from $5,000 to $12,000. Oakland has 200 police cars.
