Civil Rights Commission Chairwoman Resigns

Mary Frances Berry, blunt-spoken chairwoman of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, resigned after more than two decades of criticizing the Democratic and Republican administrations she served.
Berry, an independent, and Democratic Vice Chairman Cruz Reynoso, sent resignation letters to President Bush a day after the White House moved to replace them with Gerald A. Reynolds, a former assistant secretary in the Education Department, and Virginia lawyer Ashley L. Taylor.
Berry and Reynoso had resisted leaving, arguing their terms didn’t expire until Jan. 21.
