Pumps Set to Work on Delta Floodwaters

The first of 10 giant pumps started pumping water from an island flooded by a levee break in the delta, according to the state Department of Water Resources.
The June 3 levee break covered Jones Tract island under about 12 feet of water. More than 12,000 acres of farmland also were flooded.
The approximately 100,000 acre-feet of water will be slowly removed by the pumps, which will be started one at a time.
“When they get the bugs worked out of one, they’ll move on to the next,” said Don Strickland, a spokesman for the state.
