Applause, please

Robert LLOYD fails to appreciate how widespread the cultural appeal of theater is in this country (“A Rarefied Kind of Kicks,” June 7). We watch the Tony Awards show not just to see famous faces but to gather as a community in celebration of this ancient art.

The Tony Awards show is the modern equivalent of the festival of Dionysus in Greece, where the art of live theater was celebrated as a cultural necessity.

May your newspaper continue to devote significant space to this important entertainment event -- despite Mr. Lloyd’s narrow vision of how vitally important live theater is to our cultural heritage.
