Crime Prevention Must Be the Top Priority

As a Los Angeles police officer, I read “After 12 Years, Handcuffs Stay on LAPD Reform” (Opinion, June 6) with great interest. Joe Domanick criticizes Police Chief William Bratton for focusing on reducing crime instead of implementing the consent decree. From that, one could surmise that Domanick believes that complying with the consent decree is more important than reducing the fear and the incidence of crime, which is the mission of not only the LAPD but all law enforcement agencies.
Though the consent decree is important, nothing is more important than reducing and preventing crime in this city. I believe that Bratton appropriately made this the department’s top priority, consistent with the needs and mandates of the community.
