U.N. Envoy Resigns Amid Turmoil at Home

Venezuela’s U.N. ambassador said he was resigning to protest human rights violations and threats to democracy in the South American nation. Milos Alcalay, a career diplomat who has represented the country for 30 years, made his announcement at a United Nations news conference.
Alcalay’s resignation came amid opposition protests of the National Elections Council’s rejection of a recall vote against President Hugo Chavez. Hundreds of Chavez opponents marched in Caracas to demand the release of about 350 people arrested in demonstrations.
