Tally for President, Congress

All 435 House seats and 34 of the 100 Senate seats were at stake Tuesday. About three dozen House seats were considered competitive. Democrats hold 205 seats and have the support of the House’s lone independent, Bernard Sanders of Vermont. Republicans hold 51 Senate seats, Democrats hold 48, and one independent votes with them.

There were 11 gubernatorial elections across the nation.

In returns as of edition time, Republican victories for Democratic-held seats in North Carolina, South Carolina, Louisiana and Georgia assured the GOP of at least 52 seats in the Senate that convenes Jan. 3.
