Leader, Foe Meet Amid Row Over Tsunami Aid

From Times Wire Reports

President Chandrika Kumaratunga met with her chief political rival to seek his support for a deal -- condemned by her own coalition partners -- to share tsunami aid with Tamil Tiger rebels, officials said.

Police, meanwhile, fired tear gas and swung batons to stop 5,000 students from reaching the president’s house to protest the planned deal, and monks warned they could enlist thousands of people to launch hunger strikes if she did not scrap it.
