Chavez Fires Intelligence Chief After Blunders

From Times Wire Reports

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez fired his intelligence chief in a security shake-up following blunders and corruption scandals that had embarrassed the left-wing leader.

The government gazette announced the replacement of Col. Miguel Rodriguez Torres, head of an agency that combines the roles of state spy service and security police.

The firing of Rodriguez appeared to be a consequence of the recent escape from intelligence headquarters of Jose Maria Corredor, a major Colombian drug trafficker sought by U.S. authorities.
