Nothing Amusing About Lawyer Jokes

The publication of yet another collection of worn-out lawyer jokes is neither amusing nor newsworthy (“The Verdict’s In: Author Says Even Lawyers Laugh at the Jokes,” Jan. 9).

Substitute “African Americans,” “Jews” or “Latinos” for “lawyers” in the opening line of the article and see how many laughs you get.

Vilifying people just because they belong to a given group is not even remotely entertaining. And contrary to one of your article’s assertions, lawyer jokes do not diffuse resentment; they add to it.

Like all so-called jokes that disparage entire groups of people, lawyer jokes promote stereotypes and foment prejudice.
