Fischer Closes Door on His Political Career

Joschka Fischer, who opposed the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq while serving as Germany’s foreign minister, said goodbye to politics. Fischer, 58, will spend a year lecturing at Princeton University, beginning in September. The lawmaker said he would not return to Parliament.
Fischer joined then-Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in voicing opposition to the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. “I’m not convinced” by the idea, he told a Munich conference in early 2003 as U.S. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld looked on.
In the United States, the Green party member will also serve on the New York-based Council on Foreign Relations.
