Re “Photographer Documented Poverty’s Toll,” obituary, March 8

Gordon Parks’ death is a loss for humanity. As Tom Bamberger, adjunct curator of photography at the Milwaukee Art Museum, succinctly put it, “He epitomizes the worldview that all people, regardless of differences, have more in common than what separates them.” Unfortunately, even in the 21st century, minorities still have long a long way to go. The point couldn’t have been made clearer than what happened to the poorest victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Parks’ career exemplified what anyone, particularly minorities, must have to achieve his or her goals: initiative, strength and the desire to make a difference.
