Divers search lake after skater falls through ice

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A man skating on Donner Lake apparently drowned after falling through the ice, police said Friday.

Witnesses said the man fell through a hole in the ice Friday morning about 100 yards from the Sierra Nevada lake’s north shore. But a search by divers from the Truckee police and fire departments failed to find a body, Police Lt. Harwood Mitchell said.

The lake is estimated to be 240 feet deep at the point where the man went into the water, with a surface temperature of 32 degrees.
