Rivals consider ‘grand coalition’

Kenya’s presidential rivals are considering forming a “grand coalition government” to resolve the nation’s political crisis in the aftermath of disputed Dec. 27 elections, former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said.
Annan, who is leading mediation talks, said he hoped to reach a formal agreement by week’s end. He has sequestered negotiators at a secret location to prevent media leaks and outside influence.
Details of a power-sharing agreement have yet to be negotiated. President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga have made conflicting statements about their willingness to form such a coalition.
Annan also said both sides have agreed that a recount of the disputed poll is not feasible.
