State licenses at risk in sex abuse

Educational psychologists, marriage and family therapists and clinical social workers could lose their licenses if they are credibly accused of sexual misconduct of a minor, according to a bill signed into law Monday.
State Sen. Mark Ridley-Thomas (D-Los Angeles) introduced the legislation after a June 2007 article in The Times about an educational psychologist working in Los Angeles public schools who allegedly abused a boy hundreds of times decades ago.
The psychologist was fired by the Los Angeles Unified School District, but his license to practice was not revoked by a state board because the alleged abuse occurred before he was licensed.
