CALIFORNIA BRIEFING

A fire in Auburn, about 30 miles northeast of Sacramento, has burned through several homes and commercial buildings, officials said.

Evacuations were underway in the northern part of Auburn, said Mary Welna, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Officials did not have an exact count of how many homes and buildings were damaged or destroyed.

The fire, which began Sunday afternoon in hot weather and low humidity, was wind-whipped and by Sunday evening had burned more than 500 acres. It began near California 49 and Quartz Drive. It was 25% contained.
