No charges in vandalism of UC Berkeley chancellor’s home

The eight people arrested after protesters vandalized the UC Berkeley chancellor’s residence on Dec. 11 have not been charged with any crime and may never be, according to the Alameda County district attorney’s office.
So far there is insufficient evidence to file charges, prosecutors said. UC police will continue investigating who was responsible for the estimated $18,000 worth of damage to windows, light fixtures and large planter urns in front of the house.
Teresa Drenick, a district attorney spokeswoman, said it was unclear who the vandals were in the crowd of up to 70 people who were protesting recent large hikes in UC fees.
The eight detained included two UC Berkeley students and two UC Davis students. They could face UC discipline after campus judicial review, UC officials said.
