Re “Juvenile injustice system,” editorial, April 30

Locking up juveniles is just not sane economics. It costs about $30,000 a year to keep a prisoner locked up. Antonio Nunez was “sentenced to life in prison forever” at 14.

If Antonio has an average life span, he will spend about 60 years in prison. That prison time is going to cost you and me about $1.8 million

I wouldn’t spend a nickel to keep a kid like that in prison. I might want to spend $100,000 to rehabilitate him -- and there is an excellent chance that he can be rehabilitated.

Spending this much money on prison inmates is one of the reasons we are running state deficits.
