Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Monday made two appointments to the University of California Board of Regents, the panel that governs the 10-campus system.

George Kieffer, a prominent Los Angeles attorney and UCLA law school graduate, previously served as an alumni representative on the board and as president of the California Community Colleges Board of Governors. Kieffer is a Democrat. Charlene Zettel of Encinitas served as a Republican in the Assembly for one term and later was director of the state Department of Consumer Affairs.

Both nominations require state Senate approval.

Larry Gordon was a higher education writer for the Los Angeles Times and covered issues affecting colleges and universities in California and around the nation. He has been an assistant city editor and an urban affairs writer at The Times. He previously worked at the Bergen Record and Hudson Dispatch in his native New Jersey. He won a mid-career Fulbright grant to teach journalism in Bulgaria. Gordon has a bachelor’s from Georgetown University and a master’s in journalism from Columbia University. He left The Times in 2015.
