Tony box-office boost looks more like a bust this season

Broadway’s Tony contenders have yet to experience the typical box-office boost following last week’s nominations.
So far, only two of the four top-nominated shows have seen an uptick in ticket sales, according to data released by The Broadway League.
“Kinky Boots” (which received 13 nominations) had a $28,350 bump over last week to gross $1,140,513, while “Pippin” (nine nominations) ended up $71,674 ahead of last week’s haul of $713,712.
Ticket sales for “Matilda: The Musical” (12 nominations) dipped $4,785 for a total $1,103,030, while “Cinderella” (nine nominations) earned $91,345 less than last week’s $943,353.

New productions “Motown: The Musical” and “Lucky Guy,” starring Tom Hanks that recently turned a profit, have continued their successful runs and steady box office sales, earning $1,209,773 and $1,382,232 respectively.
Bette Milder’s one-woman show “I’ll Eat You Last: A Chat With Sue Mengers,” notably left off the Tony nominations list, saw a 17% increase in sales to end the week with $753,217.
Best play nominee “The Testament of Mary,” which closed Sunday ahead of schedule, saw a 40% boost to earn $301,343 or 37% of the Walter Kerr Theatre’s maximum gross.
Sales for the Alec Baldwin-led “Orphans” fell $46,823 to $397,646, perhaps justifying the show’s early Broadway departure.
