SAG Awards 2014: ‘Breaking Bad’ wins for ensemble in a TV drama series

AMC’s “Breaking Bad” has won the Screen Actors Guild award for performance by an ensemble in a drama series.

The series stars Bryan Cranston as Walter White, a high-school chemistry teacher who turns to manufacturing crystal meth in order to pay for his cancer treatment. Cranston won a SAG Award last year for his acclaimed performance, and has also been honored with multiple Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe.

The show’s ensemble also includes Aaron Paul, Anna Gun, R.J. Mitte, Betsy Brandt, Bob Odenkirk and Dean Norris.

The Albuquerque-set drama concluded its five-season run on AMC in September and went out on a high note, with a record 10.3 million viewers tuning in for its series finale in September. Bolstered by critical praise and strong word-of-mouth, “Breaking Bad” saw its ratings more than triple between Seasons 4 and 5, a virtually unprecedented feat for a veteran series.

The SAG award caps off a string of wins for “Breaking Bad,” which was named outstanding drama series at the Emmys in September and also picked up a Golden Globe for best drama series on Sunday.

Also nominated were last year’s winner, British period piece “Downton Abbey” (PBS), fantasy epic “Game of Thrones” (HBO), Prohibition-era drama “Boardwalk Empire” (HBO) and terrorism thriller “Homeland” (Showtime).

The 20th Screen Actors Guild Awards are being held at the Shrine Exposition Center and are being broadcast live on TBS and TNT.
