My #Pixel 6 Pro will stop receiving updates in Oct so I'm in the market for a non-Google #Android phone. Was hoping to buy the Pixel 11 to install GrapheneOS on it but those folks now recommend against buying this phone (see quoted thread). And #Fairphone isn't officially available in Australia.
I can't wait till the GrapheneOS-powered #Motorola comes out in 2027 so I'll probably get the Pixel 9/10 and install #GrapheneOS, #CalyxOS, or #LineageOS on it.
Anyone have other options to consider?

Klare Empfehlung: Finger weg vom Pixel 11.
@dr_jt @armando how long do you typically keep your phone? The Pixel 8 Pro, 10 Pro XL, and 10a should be supported for 7 years from their release date.
This puts end-of-life (EOL) for each at:
- 8 Pro: Oct 2030
- 10 Pro XL: Aug 2032
- 10a: Mar 2033
You can calculate cost/year using these EOL dates.

@armando the 10a supports MTE and is supported by GrapheneOS.

habe ich such.

≪ Back to the roots – back to privacy ≫

That would be a useful feature, because if you lose your mobile, you need FMD every minute to locate it.
@MagentaMold
I wasn't hinting at a hidden setting or feature I just wanted to know if I'm too clueless to find the setting for it.
You can also shut down the device via the UI when the phone is locked.
Actually, I guess this is now a feature request for future updates to #GrapheneOS #GOS team 🫡
hi ✌️
is there the possibility to "shut down" the phone when it's locked only with pin..?

@gael
however....its working fine on my pixel9xl with #grapheneOS 🤔 no hacks and not using exploitation mode either updated from google play.
> (...) my understanding of #privacy, (...)
What is _your_ understanding of privacy?
I consider #grapheneos to be a building block for a reasonable* level of privacy. Which specific level one needs/wants is individual and, likely, may require additional building blocks to achieve it.
#GrapheneOS improves the security and privacy over the AOSP. Claiming it is just a security project and not a privacy project is simply inaccurate. GrapheneOS is a security AND privacy project. Just read their features page, there's plenty of privacy-related features listed there: grapheneos.org/features
There's of course not such a thing as perfect software. The GOS team can't patch architectural flaws of Android, but still it's arguably the most secure OS you can run on your phone.

The "privacy" community (not the security community) has become so undemanding and demoralized that they believe #GrapheneOS offers genuine privacy.
They don't even believe in #privacy in the pre-Snowden sense anymore.
@GrapheneOS are responsible for the massive confusion surrounding the concept of #privacy.
Your ISP, #VPN and DNS providers track you. The moment you use TikTok or X, you’re being tracked. Highly precise psychological profiles of you are being created. And no, sandboxing doesn't prevent that.
I can believe that #GrapheneOS is useful against Cellebrite and Pegasus.
But please, stop labeling it a "privacy" phone. This is simply misleading.
@tariii @tpaau17db @mattesilver
> but #grapheneos can't prevent tracking. your isp, your vpn and dns provider track you.
Correct, GrapheneOS hasn't made an alternative to how the internet works.
> tiktok, X and mastodon track you
How much they can collect gets limited by hardening of the app sandbox and extensions to the permission model like context scopes, storage scopes, ... Of course an app can know what you do inside the app itself that speaks for itself.
> sandboxing doesn't prevent this.
It does help against access to your data, outside of what you do within the app itself
> grapheneos devs track you: grapheneos phones communicates with their servers by default, transmitting metadata.
@GrapheneOS doesnt collect/store sensitive personal data. Of course they need to know your device model to give you updates and because of how the internet works your IP or VPN IP is known by GrapheneOS. If that bothers you, you can disable the system updater and sideload updates via recovery mode. You can alao turn off connections to the GrapheneOS proxies.
Also, Tor exists and although Tor is very imperfect you can route your phone traffic via it on Android.
@tpaau17db @mattesilver by not being tracked.

@mattesilver security. not privacy.
#grapheneos can't deliver privacy. at least not in the way, 99% of people interpret the term.
