Thank you for starting this thread. Most interesting and enjoyable. At almost 82 I've been lucky to have been privy to a lot of system changes, tool changes, and social changes. Degrees in psychology, linguistics, psycholinguistics, years of teaching in environmental and population psychology and then specialising in databases, IT training companies, and consulting.
From working on the early #ARPAnet to today's internet. From discussing "AI" (early machine learning) with one of the original researchers at Stanford in 1964 to working with Microsoft on Natural Language Query processing in SQL Server to watching the absurd claims of #TheGreatAI_Grift.
It's been a wild ride as well as frustrating - The Limits to Growth #ClubOfRome #MIT was written by classmates trying to raise the alarm about the nature of dynamic systems, particularly as they interact at environmental, social, physical, and economic levels. Their early work has been expanded many times but especially in Australia by CSIRO.
The (system) tools and computing informed much about the probable dynamics of global systems and yet many lessons have not been learned. The current #AI_Hype is an extraordinary lesson in a bizarre approach to tools.
One of the best works on tools was written by Prof Bill Merrill.
Well worth a read.

Ja, ein Felssturz südlich des Gletschers kann mit der Satellitenaufnahme vom 27.08.2026 bestätigt werden.
Ob der Abbruch noch weiter nach Norden reicht kann wegen Wolkenverdeckung nicht erkannt werden. Auf jeden Fall fehlt eine Fläche (soweit sichtbar) von mindestens 0,1 km².

Ein Teil der hier markierten Felsnase dürfte Ursache der Flutkatastrophe in Nepal/Tibet gewesen sein. Ich skizziere das Geschehen grob so:
1. Felssturz aus dem markierten Bereich - begünstigt durch auftauenden Permafrost --> Klimawandel
2. Kinetische Energie wird in Wärme umgewandelt und lässt die Gletscherreste (Toteis) im Tal schmelzen (Pfeil)
3. Durch das induzierte Beben wird der oben liegende Gletscher (links im Bild) mobilisiert.
4. Ein Eissturz aus dem frontalen Bereich findet statt und reist zusätzlich Gesteinsmassen mit
5. Weitere Mobilisation von Schmelzwasser und Schlamm im Tal durch Umwandlung kinetischer Energie
6. Murartige Flutwelle nimmt seinen Lauf in tiefere Tallagen mit enormer kinetischer Energie.
Sturzflut: Erschwerte Suche nach Flutopfern im Himalaya
Enorme Schlammmassen und Regenfälle im Flut-Katastrophengebiet an der Grenze zwischen China und Nepal erschweren den Rettungsteams die Bergungsarbeiten und Suche nach Vermissten. Mehr als 630 Tote hat die Sturzflut im Himalaya-Gebirge bisher gefordert.

Radardaten von Sentinel 1 weißen auf starke Veränderungen direkt südlich vom Gletscherabruch in Nepal hin.
In der Animation sind in Schwarz/Weiß 2 Radaraufnahmen von Sentinel 1 zu sehen.
Die Aufnahme mit der schwarzen Fläche in der Mitte ist von heute, 28.08.2026.
Das Bild in der diese Fläche hell zu sehen ist stammt vom 16.08.2026.
Durch das wischen von der einen zur anderen Szene wird der Unterschied deutlich.
Auch ändert sich der Bereich, der unter diesem (ehemaligen) Felsvorsprung liegt (unten im Tal ist in der Darstellung links von dem Fleck).
Daher ist anzunehmen, das initial dieser Bereich als Felssturz abgegangen ist und anschließend die Gletscherstirn mobilisiert wurde.
Die Veränderung der Gletscherkante über dem Abbruch ist ebenfalls deutlich zu erkennen.
Bildabfolgen der letzten 2 Jahre zeigen, das der Gletscher selbst - zumindest für diese Zeit - stationär war. Die Gletscherspalten haben sich in diesem Zeitraum nicht verändert oder Talwärts bewegt.
Am Schluss der Animation wird eine Sentinel 2 Szene in Falschfarben zur Orientierung eingeblendet.

I know the Trisuli valley a little. And we've seen these kinds of outburst floods in the Himalayas before, though not this big. That valley is an ancient trade route- the way comes from the Newar city-states (now the Kathmandu conurbation), to Nuwakot on the Trisuli, along up past Betravati to Kyirong, and then on to other parts of Tibet. There were dozens of villages, monasteries, shrines, and markets along there, thousands of years of settlements and rituals and fields and forests.
Sometimes it feels like a slow process - the butterflies diminish year on year, the sea takes away a bit more of the golf course; and sometimes the actual speed of change is made horribly clear.

Es gibt eine aktuelle Satellitenbildaufnahme von Sentinel 2 im Katastrophengebiet von Nepal / Tibet.
Ich habe den Vergleich vom 12.08 und heute, 27.08 als Überblendung gemacht. Die Flut kam vom Fluss der nach rechts oben läuft. Nach unten / Süden findet die Entwässerung statt. Am Zusammenfluss der Flüsse in der Bildmitte lag die chinesische Grenzstation - ein massives Bauwerk das jetzt völlig verschwunden ist.
Ich schätze, dass bei der Flut so hohe Energie freigesetzt wurde, das man in Größenordnungen von Atombomben messen kann.
Laut berichten war in diesem Gebiet lange vorher schon eine anhaltende Hitze/Wärmeperiode vorhanden. Ein Problem im Hochgebirge ist der sich aufwärmende Permafrost im Fels. Bei Temperaturen von -4 °C verändert sich die Festigkeit des Eises im Felsen. Ab da kann sich das Felsgefüge ändern und destabilisieren. Es ist nicht notwendig, das es komplett schmilzt (bei >0°C).
Es ist zu lesen, das es zu einem Sturzereignis gekommen sein soll, der den Fluss aufgestaut habe und es in weiterer Folge zur Flut kam. Das ist aber mit der Zeitlichen Abfolge nicht vereinbar (das war so vor einem Jahr).
Hier kam es bereits nach 4 Minuten nach den aufgezeichneten Bebenregistrierungen im oberen Flussgebiet zur Flut. Auch glaube ich nicht, dass ein Beben mit M5.7 durch einen kollabierenden Gletscher möglich sind. Für mich deutet alles auf einen massiven Felssturz hin, der durch seine kinetische Energie einfach darunterliegenden Gletscherflächen aufgeschmolzen hat.
Auf jeden Fall eine Katastrophe in einer Größenordnung wie wahrscheinlich alle Wissenschaftler sich das nicht ausmalen konnten.
Die Destabilisierung von Permafrostbereichen wird mit steigender globaler Temperatur durch den menschengemachten Klimawandel zunehmen. Gegen solche Katastrophen helfen keine Bauwerke, Frühwarnsysteme können nur tiefliegende Regionen frühzeitig warnen. Was bleibt den Menschen dort? Absiedeln oder mit der Gefahr "leben".
Wie schwer es ist die Heimat aufzugeben zeigt sich ja auch bei uns, z.B. in Blatten in der Schweiz.
