In his brilliant essay ‘The Inevitability of Collapse in the Age of Financialisation’ substack.com/home/post/p-20877… Ryan Perkins describes how this world, which has now dominated the Earth for 500 years, is coming to an end. The ‘end of history’ proclaimed by Francis Fukuyama after 1989 was portrayed as a victory for colonial liberalism. Yet the victory was a Pyrrhic one, and the celebration a fatal arrogance.
Had one read Marx, one could and should have known this. Financial capitalism only functions as long as there is something left to conquer, as long as there is an ‘outside’, as long as colonisation is possible. With the end of the Cold War, the circle was complete. There is no longer an ‘outside’. This triggered neoliberal self-cannibalisation in the West, the comical culmination of which is the first trillionaire, Elon Musk. His trillion is a bet on a future that will not and cannot exist.
On the other hand, there is the rise of China. In China, you see, people read Karl Marx. My first question to Deepseek (after I’d installed it locally on my laptop) was: ‘Isn’t it the case that whoever owns the means of production also holds the power?’ (one of the core theses in Marx’s Capital) – Deepseek replied, in essence: ‘I don’t need to worry. The Chinese are nice people.’
As nice as people tend to be.
From this perspective, the end of the world seems inevitable. The New World is already in sight … the Old World continues to pave its way with corpses. Cruel and helpless …
