How Five Points Became The Most Infamous Slum In The History Of New York City

By Ella Spitz

Located in Lower Manhattan, Five Points was a poor, overcrowded neighborhood where disease spread rapidly, rival gangs battled for control, and violent riots frequently broke out in the streets.

Best of Week Pick -

Actually this profoundly moved me, watching this conversation between a master of comedy & #UShistory - #JonStewart - with a gold standard #journalist and #TrumpVirus punching bag (not), #KaitlanCollins

I'd seen a few snippets of the Monday show with Stewart, discussing the recent WH Correspondents' Dinner,.
At this event, several #news orgs received awards - for things like #TrumpEpsteinFiles reporting, And also one for Collins.

Kaitlan Collins - Focusing on Reporting, Not Trump’s Insults | The Daily Show

Here is the full segment with Jon Stewart meeting the 34-yr-old reporter from Alabama, and bright light at CNN.
The 'vibe' here is powerful. Both of them, very real and very much on the same page, from different perspectives.

Itt's been a while since being totally absorbed by two greats in their field brought together, for real conversation.
This just made my week, all of my favoirte things:

#journalism #media #ContextAndPerspective #satire #news #reporting #comedy #truth to #TrumpVirus + #standards

As I've said before, and it's even more true now, as history is ignored and re-written, and anger, confusion, apathy, ignorance, & trauma is widespread... With the #TrumpVirus version of #fascism running wild...

"THIS SHOULD BE THE U.S. ANTHEM" -

A #history of our origins and aspirations, Good, bad & ugly, challenges & achievements, a unique & aspirational, #democracy

A realistic and cautionary look at U.S. #history, noting both the failures and strengths - along with the urgency of late.
Ironically, a gift from Canada! Being pora* I can post the lyrics in full here - They're also on a YouTube comment (mine).
Headphones &/or volume up... A masterpiece of classic rock performance, and just so much #truth and relevance here.

I'd posted this 6 years ago, with lyrics, on "Pluspora", but that's gone now. So, a refresh. Enjoy. Reflect. Be safe and mindful.

MONSTER

Once the religious, the hunted and weary
Chasing the promise of freedom and hope
Came to this country to build a new vision
Far from the reaches of Kingdom and pope
Like good Christians some would burn the witches
Later some got slaves to gather riches
But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands, to court the wild
But she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light

And once the ties with the crown had been broken
Westward in saddle and wagon it went
And till the railroad linked ocean to ocean
Many the lives which had come to an end
While we bullied, stole and bought a homeland
We began the slaughter of the red man
But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands to court the wild
But she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light

The Blue and Grey they stomped it
They kicked it just like a dog
And when the war was over
They stuffed it just like a hog

And though the past has its share of injustice
Kind was the spirit in many a way
But its protectors and friends have been sleeping
Now it's a monster and will not obey

The spirit was freedom and justice
And its keepers seemed generous and kind
Its leaders were supposed to serve the country
But now they won't pay it no mind
Cause the people grew fat and got lazy
Now their vote is a meaningless joke
They babble about law and order
But it's all just an echo of what they've been told
Yeah, there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into the noose
And it just sits there watchin'

The cities have turned into jungles
And corruption is stranglin' the land
The police force is watching the people
And the people just can't understand
We don't know how to mind our own business
'Cause the whole world's got to be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
No matter who's the winner we can't pay the cost
'Cause there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into the noose
And it just sits there watchin'

America, where are you now
Don't you care about your sons and daughters
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster
America, where are you now
Don't you care about your sons and daughters
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster

On the 80th anniversary of the Port Chicago explosion in California that killed 320 people, the U.S. Navy has exonerated 256 Black sailors who were unjustly court-martialed. The sailors had refused to return to work in an unsafe environment, and their prosecution took place when the U.S. military was segregated. The sailors "refused to keep loading munitions in the same unsafe and inhumane conditions that contributed to the catastrophe," said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in a statement, adding that, decades later, the military recognizes that the sailors "were right, and the segregated Navy that unnecessarily risked their lives was wrong." Here's more from ABC.
