On alert for feathered friends

Times Staff Writer

Question: I’ve lost two hummingbirds in a week. They fly into the windows and are killed on impact. My heart is breaking! I have added a piece of painter’s tape to the windows but am hoping you may have a source for better-looking decals.

Christie Garrett, Arcadia

Answer: A clever new decal from Bend, Ore.-based WindowAlert may help. The translucent decal works by reflecting ultraviolet light. Though the decal is barely visible to humans, it glows brilliantly to birds, whose vision is keener. WindowAlert works best when applied to a window’s exterior. It adheres with static cling and can be removed easily. A four-pack sells for $6.45 at bird stores and at www.windowalert.com.
