In the latest installment of “Portraits of L.A.,” Los Angeles Times staff photojournalist Myung Chun takes on an assignment unlike any in his 29 years at The Times: photographing sharks.
Joined by staff writer Clara Harter, Chun heads into Santa Monica Bay with researchers from the California State Long Beach Shark Lab as they search for and tag sharks. Shark sightings have increased along parts of the California coast, driven by a range of environmental factors. Photographing the animals proves challenging, but Chun ultimately got the shot.
Gina Ferazzi, a staff photojournalist with the Los Angeles Times, has documented numerous wildfires over her three-decade career. She was part of the team that won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news in 2004 for coverage of the Southern California wildfires.
On Jan. 9, Ferazzi was on the front lines capturing the devastation of the Eaton fire in Altadena.
In this episode, Times photojournalist Jason Armond shows how he captured images of a super blue moon on Aug. 30, 2023.
