Tradition Inspiring Growth

Few Japanese confectionery companies can claim a heritage spanning a century while continuing to reinvent themselves. Since its founding in 1925, Senjakuame Honpo has built its reputation on balancing tradition with innovation, an approach that remains central to its strategy as it enters its second century.

The company’s identity is closely linked to Japan’s cultural heritage. In 1952, it adopted the Senjakuame name through a relationship with Kabuki actor Nakamura Senjaku II, a connection that continues today. Rather than viewing its history as a legacy to preserve unchanged, the company uses it as a platform for continuous renewal.

“Our spirit is to embrace new challenges while preserving our traditions,” said President Hideo Yoneda. “That balance is what has supported our company throughout its history.”

The same philosophy shapes its leadership. Yoneda has encouraged a more collaborative management style that values ideas from employees across the organization instead of relying solely on traditional top-down decision-making. While consensus requires careful discussion, he believes it strengthens commitment, improves decision-making and creates an environment where innovation can thrive.

At the heart of the company’s culture is a belief in harmony. “Our vision is to combine new ideas to make people healthier and happier,” Yoneda said. “Harmony has always been at the heart of our company, and we want to continue taking on new challenges while growing together with our partners.”

Building Global Partnerships

International expansion is now one of Senjakuame Honpo’s main priorities. Following its centenary celebrations, the company launched an initiative to introduce its signature product, “100% Pure Honey Candy,” to the United States, supported by English-language packaging and products tailored to international tastes, including yuzu and ginger flavors.

The ambition extends beyond exporting confectionery. Senjakuame Honpo aims to showcase the quality and uniqueness of Japanese products while establishing sustainable relationships with wholesalers, retailers and distribution partners capable of bringing its products to consumers worldwide.

“For the next 100 years, we will continue to challenge ourselves to develop innovative and unique products. We are also looking for partners who can help establish sustainable wholesale and retail networks that ultimately bring our products to consumers,” Yoneda said.

That long-term approach also defines the company’s relationships at home. Senjakuame Honpoworks closely with farmers in Kochi Prefecture, sourcing local citrus while supporting regional communities through equipment donations, promotional activities and collaborative product launches that raise awareness of local agriculture.

Drawing on decades of international business experience, Yoneda believes Japanese companies are recognised globally for reliability, consistency and enduring partnerships. Those same principles continue to guide Senjakuame Honpo as it expands overseas, positioning the company to share the quality and uniqueness of Japanese confectionery with new markets while creating lasting value for customers and business partners alike.
