Origins of a Water-Technology Pioneer
Founded in 1946 in Nagano Prefecture, Organo emerged from a wartime challenge with lasting impact. Its founder, a military doctor, developed an ion-exchange process to deliver clean water to soldiers in the field. “He wanted to deliver safe water to soldiers on the front lines, so he developed a technology that didn’t require distillation,” recalled President Masayuki Yamada. After the war, the company applied the same method to produce pure water for medical injections, establishing its role in industrial purification.
Organo’s early innovation extended to producing Japan’s first white sugar using ion-exchange technology. “We were the first company in Japan to create white sugar using ion-exchange resin,” Yamada said. The business expanded into chemicals, food and power generation, including supplying purification systems for nuclear plants. Its broad customer base remains a key strength. “One of our strengths is having a wide base of customers across multiple industries,” he added.
Enabling the Semiconductor Transition
Organo’s modern growth has been driven by semiconductors. Entering the field in the 1990s, the company developed ultra-pure water systems capable of meeting the extreme precision required for chip manufacturing. In the 2000s, it began supporting major global producers, including a leading Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer. “We are providing ultra-pure water for this customer, and they are one of our main clients,” Yamada said, noting the relationship is not exclusive.
Electronics now account for about 70% of total sales. “We have grown exponentially thanks to the semiconductor industry,” he said. The relevance for the United States is clear: ultra-pure water systems are essential to domestic chip production and supply chain resilience. They also help reduce water usage through advanced recycling—an increasingly important factor in regions facing water constraints.
Expanding in the United States
To support this growth, Organo established a subsidiary in Arizona in 2020. “We are focusing most on the American market right now,” Yamada said. “Our Taiwanese semiconductor customer is doing a big investment in Arizona, and we created a local company to support that.”
These investments contribute to U.S. efforts to expand chip production, strengthen supply chains and create high-skilled jobs. Recruitment is now a priority. “We need to hire good personnel in the U.S.,” Yamada said. Organo is seeking engineers, project managers and technicians to work on advanced manufacturing projects, offering exposure to cutting-edge technology and collaboration with global teams.
The company is also building partnerships with engineering firms, contractors, utilities and water-technology companies. “We will need to partner with local construction companies in the States,” he noted. Organo is open to collaboration and potential acquisitions to accelerate its expansion in the U.S. market.
The Power of Purification
At the center of Organo’s identity is what it calls the “power of purification”—its ability to deliver any grade of water, from ultra-pure to recycled industrial water. “Purification is the technology we have nurtured in the past,” Yamada said. “We can purify any kind of liquid.”
This capability is increasingly critical as water scarcity grows. “Water is a basic resource we need to survive,” he said. “Its value will only increase.” In regions like the American Southwest, where every drop counts, advanced recycling and purification systems are becoming essential infrastructure.
