Ducks’ Luca Sbisa could make season debut against Rangers

It’s a game-time decision Monday night whether Ducks defenseman Luca Sbisa will make his season debut after missing the season’s first 15 games with a sprained left ankle.

Sbisa, 23, injured his ankle Sept. 16 in the Ducks’ exhibition opener against Phoenix, and discomfort persisted longer than he expected before playing two games on a conditioning assignment for the Ducks’ Norfolk, Va., minor-league affiliate this past weekend.

Sbisa, starting his fifth season with the Ducks after scoring a goal with seven assists with 23 penalty minutes in 41 games last season, practiced with the Ducks during their morning skate in New York on Monday prior to their 4:30 p.m. Pacific time game against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

A team spokesman said Sbisa “will play if he feels good” before Monday night’s game.

Saku Koivu injury update

Center Saku Koivu has been skating in Anaheim after suffering a concussion Oct. 27 in Columbus, and could return to play as soon as Wednesday when the Ducks return from their eight-game road trip vs. Phoenix at Honda Center, a team spokesman said.

For Monday, the Ducks summoned center Rickard Rakell from Norfolk and he’s expected to play in a spot that has been occupied by Peter Holland.

Goalie Viktor Fasth, sidelined all trip by a lower-body injury, has conditioned in Orange County in recent days and is said to be day-to-day.
