No. 4 Texas rallies to upset No. 1 Ohio State; Oklahoma State stuns No. 6 Oregon

Hollywood Smothers scored on a one-yard run with a leap over the pile with 25 seconds left and No. 4 Texas rallied from 20 points down in the fourth quarter to beat No. 1 Ohio State 24-23 Saturday night.

The Buckeyes had appeared in complete control after a dominant three quarters that built a 23-3 lead.

But Texas rallied behind quarterback Arch Manning, whose touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo early in the fourth started the comeback. Smothers scored on a one-yard run with 7:14 to play before Ohio State drove for what could have been a clinching field goal.

Connor Hawkins, who had earlier made three field goals, missed from 45 yards, setting up Texas’ winning drive.

The victory is arguably the biggest regular season win in six seasons for coach Steve Sarkisian, and certainly for Manning, who had struggled to live up to Heisman Trophy expectations early in his career.

at Oklahoma State 39, No. 6 Oregon 31: Drew Mestemaker threw for 317 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 102 yards and a score, and Oklahoma State ended a 21-game skid against FBS opponents by pulling off the first true stunner of the season.

Coach Eric Morris’ first victory with the Cowboys won’t be forgotten by any of the delirious fans in Stillwater, particularly after Oklahoma State went 1-11 last season and lost 24-10 to Tulsa in its season opener.

The Ducks (1-1), the preseason No. 2 who looked vulnerable in a season-opening home win over Boise State, suffered a huge blow to their national title hopes. Oregon had been favored by 23½ points.

at Michigan 17, No. 11 Oklahoma 10: Jordan Marshall scored on a tiebreaking one-yard run set up by an interception midway through the fourth quarter and Bryce Underwood ran for a 38-yard touchdown to help the Wolverines (2-0) bounce back after needing a Hail Mary to beat Western Michigan last weekend.

Michigan was the butt of jokes all week after a lucky break put a second on the clock and gave Underwood another chance to complete a game-winning pass. Underwood ran for 87 yards, including his touchdown run late in the first quarter, and threw for 111 yards without a turnover against the Sooners (1-1).

Oklahoma was favored to win by nearly a touchdown and never led. They were scoreless until John Mateer threw a 22-yard touchdown to Mackenzie Alleyne midway through the third quarter.

at No. 2 Georgia 70, Western Kentucky 20: Gunner Stockton completed 13 of 16 passes for 234 yards and tied a school record with five touchdown passes as the Bulldogs (2-0) gained momentum for its Southeastern Conference schedule by overwhelming the Hilltoppers.

Wearing all-white uniforms for the first time in team history, Georgia (2-0) led 49-0 in the first half — matching the most productive half in school history — as it prepared for next week’s SEC opener at Arkansas.

at No. 3 Notre Dame 52, Rice 0: C.J. Carr completed 16 of 20 passes for 253 yards and four touchdowns before being replaced by Noah Grubbs in the third quarter. Notre Dame outgained Rice 478-128 in total yards.

at No. 5 Indiana 55, Howard 0: Josh Hoover threw four touchdown passes, three to wide receiver Charlie Becker, and the Hoosiers (2-0) rolled to a win in a game that was shortened to a 10-minute fourth quarter.

Hoover completed six of 11 passes for 145 yards. He has four touchdowns in each of his first two games this season. Becker had 81 yards, finishing one touchdown catch short of matching the school’s single-game record. Neither played in the second half.

at No. 10 Texas A&M 48, Arizona State 20: Marcel Reed had three touchdown passes and the defense scored twice in the fourth quarter as the Aggies (2-0) pulled away late.

Texas A&M led by four points before Reed threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Mario Craver on the second play of the fourth quarter to make it 31-20. Tyler White fumbled before a punt later in the fourth and Arizona State recovered on the Texas A&M 34. But A&M’s T.J. Searcy hit Cutter Boley as he threw on the next play and 261-pound defensive end Marco Jones grabbed the ball and rumbled 55 yards for the score.

The Aggies led 41-20 later in the fourth when Julio Humphrey intercepted a pass by Boley and returned it 45 yards for another score.

No. 12 Alabama 45, at Kentucky 17: Keelon Russell threw for 188 yards and a touchdown to help the Crimson Tide (2-0, 1-0 SEC) defeat the Wildcats (1-1, 0-1) in the SEC opener for both teams.

at No. 15 Brigham Young 28, Arizona 17: Bear Bachmeier threw for 217 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a touchdown to help the Cougars (2-0) earn the victory in the Big 12 Conference opener.

LJ Martin led BYU on the ground with 98 yards in 20 carries. The Cougars improved to 6-0 against Arizona under coach Kalani Sitake.

Noah Fifita threw for 230 yards and a touchdown and ran for another to lead the Wildcats. Arizona (1-1, 0-1) was shut out after halftime after scoring on three of its first six drives.

No. 16 Penn State 27, at Temple 9: Rocco Becht threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns, with two of those scores to tight end Benjamin Brahmer, to help the Nittany Lions (2-0) defeat the Owls.

Penn State survived a first half loaded with failed shots at the end zone and a missed field goal that kept the score close and stirred memories of one of the program’s great losses against an unranked team when former Temple coach Matt Rhule led the Owls to the upset victory in 2015 at Lincoln Financial Field.

at No. 17 Southern Methodist 56, UC Davis 10: Kevin Jennings threw for 337 yards and a career-high five touchdowns while playing just the first half and the Mustangs (2-0) rolled against the Aggies (2-1) on a scorching day in Dallas.

at No. 19 Washington 16, Utah State 14: Freshman Ansu Sanoe capped his first career drive with the Huskies’ lone touchdown after they overcame another slow start to beat the Aggies (0-2).

Sanoe dove into the end zone from a yard out with 6:44 remaining in the second quarter to punctuate an eight-play, 65-yard drive and give the Huskies (2-0) a 10-7 lead. Those would be the game’s last points until Tyler Robles made a 26-yard field goal with 12:54 to go in the fourth to stretch the lead to six.

On Saturday, Michael Van Buren Jr. ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more, including a 38-yarder to Joshua Porter on fourth down with 19 seconds to go, lifting South Florida to a 28-24 win over Army in an American Conference opener … Michael Scott returned two punts for touchdowns and Miles Halbert blocked and returned another for a score as James Madison rolled past Wagner 87-3, tying the NCAA record for punt-return touchdowns and setting a program record for points.
